Nikhil Chopra at the New Museum live until Sunday, November 8

Dressed as a Victorian draughtsman Yog Raj Chitraka, artist Nikhil Chopra departs the New Museum in the morning, visits Ellis island to document what he sees there through drawing, and returns to the museum in the afternoon for a performance. He is spending every night until Sunday in the museum, turning his life into a ritualistic spectacle.

Experience it…

Follow the events nearly live here: http://twitpic.com/photos/newmuseum. Or visit the museum in the afternoons to see Nikhil and his drawings in the galleries.

Talk about it…

What is the role of ritual and spectacle in your life? How do you share your personal experience of a place or an everyday action with others?

Through this drawing performance, titled “Yog Raj Chitrakar: Memory Drawing IX”, the artist investigates the collective memory of 1920’s New York City — its social and personal upheavals caused by immigration, architecture and labor.

How are we impacted by these things today?

Do something about it…

Create a drawing of a place you visit everyday — include details of the architecture or the people you observe. Send it to us and we’ll create a minor spectacle on our pages here. Email: spectacle@artimeny.com.

In admiration of Ori Gersht’s film and video work, I rushed Nate past the photos on view in this exhibition at CRG Gallery to watch Evaders… not once but twice. We could have watched it more! Gersht uses the landscape to address complex issues of place, memory, and history, creating a poignant and romantic narrative. Take time to watch the entire 15-minute film and be sure to check out the photographs which some viewers have mistaken for paintings! If you would like some information, read the press release at the desk and leave with your own personal understanding of the journey.
